Well, a couple hours ago I did something that I havent done in the 17 odd years i've been flying.......

Came in to land at lookout after a short flight in some funky air with strong south. Got a few turns in something a little ragged about 100 over, and then it fell apart and I commited to landing. Came in fast lined up right where I wanted to be, then I had nothing flared and couldn't even get my feet beneath me. pancaked in fairly gently and get up to discover I bent the left downtube.......

so........knowing that any bad landing comes with a plethora of excuses on how its not my fault, i need some........

also i need a new downtube :cuss:

"The wide angle lens on the GoPro just made the downtube look bent, it's actually quite straight"

I had a great landing today after a turbulent and exhausting 2-1/2hr flight while sick. I can only assume that you and I did one of those Freaky Friday trading places thingys where our minds suddenly inhabit each other's bodies. There's your excuse. Don't say I never gave you anything but I do still owe you a bottle or porter from way, way back in your Garden Grove days.

Check the shear web inside. If it's not bent, buckled or kinked then I wouldn't worry about it.
the web is straight as can be, the exterior walls are dimpled with some crazying

it's going to rack improvements on my xterra, not something i want to have to worry about while wanging,

100$ for piece of mind on an 8k wing...i'll take the new tube

Campers,

Any bets?

I recommend checking any tube for " straightness" by pointing it up at the sky, and looking straight through it, as if the tube was a telescope. It's much easier to see any deformity from being straight, with that trick. Point the tube at a bright cloud (NOT the Sun) to get a better look inside the tube.

The US flag at the baseball diamond is blowing briskly as you turn onto final (8:06), yet when you land there is virtually zero wind in the landing field.

Rotor stall.

Wheels are great for low-cut, smoother LZ's. Proper landing skills are paramount for out-landings in tall weeds, crops, brush, etc.

I really like Robert's landing prep style... and his austere landings...

I am referring to Robert placing his right hand thumb down on the DT while on his initial approaches. This allows positive control with appropriate, damn-near-automatic airspeed increase. It also reduces workload while in ground effect and less chance of catching the rear wire rather than DT.

There are no good rough-field landing vids that I could find, but if there is a chance of landing out in a nasty field or worse, point landing skills are always preferred over sliding it in and busting things up...
