Since moving to a side mounted chute I have often considered adding more chest protection. Getting slammed in the chests is probably the next biggest risk after hitting our heads.
Like Jason said Keeping our skills current and judgement conservative is the best protection. Anyone that thinks this sport has built in safe guards is a fool!
Our safety Is 100% in our hands. An accident that may kill a slow reacting pilot may not even put a bruise on a pilot that reacts quickly to protect their fragile body parts. Never be surprised that a great pilot like you is about to crash.
Ever time I watch someone slam the keel with their head I wait to see if they will move again. I am surprised that they usually walk away with a sore neck. Just Luck. Accelerated Risk factor is hovering.
