I found it easy to cross a range of hills rising 1,300 ft above the sea coast on both sides of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand. The ranges run from north to south, and there was a light 6-knot NW breeze on the east side. There was a line of convergence cloud at about 2,500 ft.
I had to cross 5 km (3 miles) of forest once I cleared the summit, so I went as high as I could, without getting into the cloud. There was no "sinky" air on the way over, so I could maintain 2,400 ft without difficulty. Coming back was just as easy.
I wouldn't attempt this flight if the wind was stronger than 15 knots, as there could be sever sink on the lee side of the hills, making getting back difficult.
