Quote from email I sent to friend, "Dan Howitt says, is foot launched powered hang gliding a more pure form of hang gliding?" What do you's all think?

Purity itself is a very impure concept.

Fly fishing and smoking a pipe while hang gliding. Oh wait, add some scotch whiskey too. Purity in motion.

Hmm, when started in the late 70s, there was a guy flying his EXO7 seated, smoking his pipe ( no pot i guess ) while flying.. Totally relaxed.
And, Didier Favre had his Bluesharp and Champagne on board.....
Me only bluesharp ( long time ago....)

This is one of those questions where the answer depends on however people want to define things.. as there is no technical definition. If you choose to go with a subjective approach, maybe it *feels* more or less "pure" to you.. which is fine and dandy if you happen to feel either way.

Not sure how the forum can add to that. :surrender:

I started RC gliding about a year before I took up Hg.

For a long time I was a purist, and preached that adding a motor to the RC was blasphemy.

Now after all these years I've come around, and find that the RC gliders I fly primarily on the slope mostly have an electric motor and folding prop.

The slopes I fly are covered with huge thick brush, big rocks, and rattlesnakes. Making the "Walk of Shame" down the hill to retrieve a glider lost in a sink cycle is no longer an option, I'm just to old and decrepit for it. Nowadays when I lose the lift I easily add power for a few seconds and get back up to launch height.

I rarely fly Hg XC. If I had an electric powered harness I'd do a lot more of it. Much less fear of having to use a bailout I've never seen before.

I think that "purism" is a luxury for the younger and less experienced pilots. It's totally forgivable for we seniors to have a motor.

So an eHG is basically Viagra for old HG pilots -- so you don't have to worry about getting it up.

Hang gliding for flying; FLPHG for sightseeing.

Seriously, both pursuits compliment each other. I can use my motor to survey multiple thermal triggers in a single afternoon that would takes me weeks through ordinary hang gliding. I can use the motor to get up on hills that have no launches on their summits.

It's great to be able to go cross country, then start up the motor and return to your point of origin without the need of a driver to come and get you.

I may be the least qualified person to weigh in on this due to the fact that I do not have ANY FLPHG experience yet, but if the objective of hang gliding is to experience bird-like flight then I would note that birds can either glide or fly under power.

That is true.
Even the eagle must beat his wings to get up to the first thermal, so I like to think of the action of my motor as the "flapping."
