What do you want from a video?

After posting my latest edited flight here about 10 days ago and believing this video to be my best effort yet,{ I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder},I was mystified to get a big zilch on any feedback...No replies, no criticism, no thanks not even a  or down...I have sometimes added comments to a fellow video posters when it was obvious that even with many views no body could be bothered to reply, to show some feedback or encouragement....I know some/many? may not care for any feedback, however I came to realize I post as much for your enjoyment as mine! I guess on behalf of the many "movie makers" the amount of effort to create these video is amazing, let alone if you add 3d track logs and other views, {thanks J.D. and others}...So to finish up I figured why not ask the viewers .and maybe find perhaps a common link to a well enjoyed video?, if there is one?.....Thanks for polling.. Col.

Hi Col,
My rule is that editing is what makes or breaks a video and the main rule I follow is to be sure the quality of the recording is decent use the editing process to tell the story.
Unfortunately, I've lost interest in posting videos or just about anything else here for that matter. 5-10 years ago this was an active forum but Facebook took over also hosts high res video. The trolls here drove out the bulk of the posting traffic as well. I like FB which lets me block rude people so they can't even see my posts.
Cheers, Jonathan

Thanks for your reply, I agree with your main rule advice. Just watched a couple of your o.t.b. days. .you set the bar high with your editing and I am grateful for that...enjoyable viewing, maybe I will learn something more from the poll? Good luck with your recovery...Col.

Thanks. I've had to learn to be utterly ruthless with leaving footage on the cutting room floor and not getting all sentimental about it. Greg Porter used to do excellent videos and his style was different from mine. I'd study his videos if I were you. They were more popular than mine ever were but then he was far too nice for his own good and may have suffered the stresses and strains that come with being too nice. I think you know where this is going because he nearly died as a result of being too giving. All that aside, I suggest you review his work. It's well worth a look.

I could easily imagine that to be true. With all the videos you've created, do you ever make a "Director's Cut" just for your own enjoyment? Or theme vids, like Favorite Landings, Beautiful Cloud Formations, Flying with Birds, etc?

I try to look for a unique story in each of my videos. I keep the length to around 4 minutes. I add an instrumental soundtrack. Although there are frequent copyright claims, I don't expect to ever monetize my videos, so I don't care. I only get a couple of hundred hits if I am lucky.

I keep all the raw footage on TB hard drives so that I can amuse myself in the Old Folks' retirement home in the future.

Col, I feel your pain. Been there. And no comments. Man... that kinda sits all wrong. "Ok.... no more vids from me!"

I just reviewed a few seconds of the last vid you posted here. I wanted to say something then, but I didn't. "If ya don't have something nice to say....."

I am no expert in film or vid directing/editing. For that, I'd refer you to one of my HG vid heroes.... yeah, Mr. Jonathan. At the very least, many of his vids are interesting. His examples that have muzak as the only audio nearly bore me to death.... I have to kill the sound in order to continue to watch them. And then, I sometimes only watch them in part, but always find myself yawing and sliding my rolling office chair during his excellent extractions from nearly impossible escapes. He can be a real shlt-magnet. There's ALWAYS something to learn from his stuff. I say all that with all the love and respect that I can manage.

I like most of Robert Booth's vids ('East Bay Hang Gliding' on YT).... super simple, yet he keeps you on the edge. Just wish he had some commentary.
There are other Hg vids that I enjoy as well, but their composers are many times not consistently adequate in their delivery.
I'm nearly certain I don't have ADD.

What bores me:
1) Muzak. No other interjections, no sweet songs of the wind, no commentary, all muzak. It holds ZERO meaning or interest for me. If it starts out to be muzak, I may watch the launch, but then I go straight to the end to see the landing, if there is one. The video composure could be brilliant. But sorry. No compromises. To me it's a waste of my time if I'm not laughing or learning.
I really don't understand why people want to stick in some man-made "music" when there are a plethora of interesting things (audio) going on, being captured perfectly on the video camera, and all they want to do is cover it all up! Inconceivable!

What excites and keeps me on the edge of my seat:

1) Good commentary. This is not only from the pilot, but from ground-crew, from the sag-wagon/chase vehicle driver/crew, etc. All verbal comms help to paint a 3-D picture. Even the shenanigans and banter at the set-up and tear-down areas. It's people who make HG what it is, so do your best to celebrate the pilots and crews, and they ALWAYS have something entertaining/educational to tell the rest of us, whether they mean to or not. And when I say commentary, I mean unrehearsed, real-time commentary. Descriptive commentary to fill in some of the blanks can be of value and informative as well, as Jonathan has also done well.

2) The sweet song of the wind as the glider yaws, pitches, banks and dives. It has a song and language all it's own, and to cover that up is, well..... ! The ambient wind sounds lend much more depth to the flight than any other audio can.... except possibly for entertaining/informative commentary.

3) The visuals.... To me, it could be 480p, but it could be the greatest vid in the world if only the audio contained no muzak, allowed the viewer to imagine the touch of the wind through it's varied sounds, and plenty of quality commentary.
I think changing the camera angles and view points (multiple cameras) is a good idea, but cameras are expensive anymore, and two viewpoints are fine. Refer to some of Jonathan's vids. Normally not a big fan of the pilot manually flipping the camera for different views. But sometimes it works. Sometimes.

4) Background theme-song. Hmmm. It's gotta be way in the background. And then, only sporadically. If done well, it can really set the tone and emotion. If too much, it ruins the whole show. I've tried this on my first flight-vid that I attempted real-time commentary, and at the time I thought it all came out well. But after watching it a few more times after publishing it, I think I went a bit overboard on the background theme. It's gotta be very artistically done if it's gonna make the vid worth watching.
(if you really want to view the vid-flop I am referring to, go to SagaSeaCraft channel on YT - 'Hang Gliding over Hibriten Mtn' ... yeah, and leave a f'kin' comment while you're there, positive or negative!)

I think it requires a lot of practice to develop a good video-editing formula to create watchable, entertaining vids. Cruise around YT and watch some of the latest well done, popular vids in any catagory, and then take a look at that channel's beginning vids. There is usually a large learning-curve that is plainly evident.

Hope my honesty wasn't too brash and hard to swallow. But then I'd rather someone be straight-up and uncompromising when I'm trying to get to the bottom of a subject. :)

You Guys have no idea how much I get out of watching your flying Videos. I am in a position now where I can not fly my Beloved Predator. In fact this coming weekend I hope to go up to Mount Diablo and ride along with the Driver and watch my Friends Fly.

I want to fly again so badly. I get some relief from my desperation to fly from the time I spend watching the Flying Videos.

I say: Keep the Videos comming!

All good guys, I think I will learn as much from the comments as from the poll. I reviewed some of Greg"s videos , well edited indeed, doesn't drone footage really add a wonderful view? As the title says.. What do you want from a video?.. let us all know  .

I mostly make flying videos to spread the word. Sometimes I make them to document things too. I also do more complex videos etc for work, but that's another story.

These days you can't be put off by no commenting or whatevers — the internet's become a very strange place where friends get dumped etc etc etc — it can be ruthless. So I just don't give a fuk anymore, if someone chooses to Unfriend me for this reason or that, well that's up to them. If anything it perhaps reflects on them and their quality of character more than anything else. Recommend keeping your chin up, and not to give too much of a toss about internet w@nkers who aren't your real friends anyways. Fuk dat. Nay-sayers are gonna say nay... leave 'em to it I say. Keep making flying videos man :)

Normally I will start with a story, then think about audio, footage etc etc.

Today I put one up to show other pilots a new kind of harness... shitty footage and all. Just to get the word out there...
