I'm going to be traveling to Valle de Bravo in February with some of my hang gliding buddies and I want to purchase travel insurance that covers medical costs and repatriation should something untoward occur while we're in Mexico. Several different companies sell travel insurance, but some of them exclude coverage for accidents involving "adventure sports".

Does anyone have any suggestions on reputable insurers that provide this type of coverage?

Use to be they were the only ones that would come get you, SCUBA or not. Would be curious to know if this is still true and thus a viable choice. Have fun in Valle!

I used https://www.sevencorners.com/ when I flew in Valle de Bravo and in Colombia. They have an add-on that covers action sports and the fine print specifically lists hang gliding as one of the covered sports. At least it did when I used it. But it does exclude being covered if you are involved in any sort of competition.

Recently this place isn't available if you live in certain states. I have no idea why. So depending on where you live you may need to find another option.

I recall getting something like $1,000,000 coverage for a week for something like $45.

Thankfully I never needed to use the service so I can't say whether this is a good service or not. I'm pointing it out as a possible option that does cover hang gliding.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rick. I Googled "Seven Corners insurance reviews" and they don't appear to be very good at paying claims or responding to people making claims, at least based upon many of the poor reviews they received.

They got an A+ rating from the BBB, but all 13 reviews on their website are negative.

I know most people that are satisfied with their service probably aren't likely to write reviews, but it does make you wonder whether they're really reputable and will stand behind their policy by paying claims that are legitimately owed.

What? An insurance company that doesn't eagerly want to pay you what you are entitled to? That's crazy.

Good to know. Let us know if you find a better one.

One more thing...I just took a look through the mythreecents.com consumer review website, and I'd take the critical reviews with a bit of skepticism. I looked through the travel services area, and nearly all of the listed services get terrible reviews. Travelocity, for example, gets a 1.1 out of 5. And yet I've been using Travelocity to book flights for years, with never a problem. It may be that it self-selects for only those cases that go badly, or maybe people like me who are happy don't bother to write positive reviews.

I bought a $25 plan from sevencorners.com last year for a trip to Valle and will do so again this year. But I likewise would love to hear if anyone actually had to file a claim with them or any other outfit and how it was handled.

I know nothing of insurance, but will be waiting to hear how your trip goes. Valle was on my list for this winter, but health issues has pushed that back for at least another year or so. Good luck and enjoy! Chris

Just came back three days ago from Valle. We all used World Nomads. Worldnomads.com You will need to get the policy that covers HG. ON their website it says they are a secondary insurer but will pay 1st. My friend used it all the way including a helicopter ride and a 7 day hospital stay. Just make sure you get it before you go.

I recently got reimbursed for my $300 medical bill I had in Valle last month. My travel insurance was AMA Canada (AAA in the states), the cost of getting it was $30 for 10 days and it was totally worth it

JR,

Some places (maybe not all), a company can "contribute"support to the raters, and get any rating they want. I once filed a complaint with them about a company, and they repeatedly "lost" my complaint. I took to having various people call to check for complaints against that company, and they always had "no complaints" on file against that "top rated" company. When I took the phone to call BS on them, they always got pissed and hung up, but they lied every time, knowing I had an open complaint, and just hoping that it was not me again.

Those ratings may be meaningless.

Thanks for the 411. I went with your suggestion and signed up for travel insurance with Worldnomads.com. Sorry to hear about your friend who needed to use if for a helicopter ride and seven days in the hospital. I hope he/she makes a full recovery and gets back in the air in the not too distant future.
