Visors on helmets resembling the "bill" of a baseball cap are a relatively recent appearance; I've seen them only on BMX helmets (and don't know what purpose they serve). I also have no objection to the use of the term "face shield" for the apparatus on a hang gliding helmet, though it is longer than "visor".
JJ,

Care to state your helmet of choice?

EDIT: Oops - sorry JJ!

The first helmet below has a VISOR.

The second has a FACE SHIELD.

You probably don't want a visor on a hang gliding helmet, as it would restrict your forward and upward vision.

(No doubt someone can post a photo of a helmet for sale with a face shield that they are calling a visor but, as with many things on the internet, it would be wrong)
Actually both of your examples are visors.
Really? So when you order your new helmet with a "Visor," how do you know what you'll get? Will the manufacturer send you a "visor" or a "face shield?"
Admittedly the terms are becoming blurred through repeated misuse by uninformed individuals but, like many things in hang gliding, there are times when you have to get it exactly right.

And this is what I love about these forums: newbies correcting Master pilots
Since when does being a Master pilot make you above reproach when giving vocabulary lessons?

Maybe so called "Master" pilots need to MASTER being nice to the new guys... before there aren't any more new guys to be nice to :surrender:
Or at least do their homework before speaking...

Much love Ryan. I had those links at the ready just in case they were needed. Thanks a million.

So, is this the helmet you're now using? Or are you still considering?

First time poster here, so I hope no toes will be stepped on here.

I was wondering what the best helmet for a newbie H2 was? Seems there are a number of threads currently discussing the same question (so I’ll probably end up posting in each). But the reason I am writing is to share my “campaign/poll” in Massdrop. If you haven’t heard of it, and I don’t blame you at all, this site allows people to vote for products of interest and once the poll has gathered enough interest (usually 200 or so votes), Massdrop will reach out to the company in an effort to get a reduced group rate on the highest voted product. I just made a poll for helmets and thought I would share!

dro.ps/v/FBpzXAF
(seems I can't add it as an official link until admins verify it's not spammmmmm)

In an effort to debunk any ulterior motives and be completely transparent, there are incentives for sharing (something like a perk box after a certain number of others purchased the product); I, however am most interested in having a single place for comparison and *fingers crossed* getting a cheaper deal overall!

Please check it out, and also let me know if I’ve infringed on thread/posting policies

Thanks!

Very nice Tom. Give us a critique on the helmet when you get a chance.
Finally flew with it this week for the first time. I had removed the visor, and installed a Pryme headset with mic. It was very easy to do with the provided velcro from Pryme, and the design of the helmet liner snap attachments. I wish I could tell you my impressions during the flight, but I completely forgot that I was flying with a new helmet before I even walked the glider to launch. I remembered in the LZ when I had to take it off because the helmet is secured with two D-rings instead of the a snap clasp like my old helmet. I am happy so far.

If anyone needs a new helmet, I just bought one with the recommended "EN 966" impact certification on sale for $66 from UK Airsports. It's made by Lazer and the model is "X-Stream." They're made specifically for HG and PG purposes. I saw them online elsewhere selling for over $250 (one was even used)! The style is a lot like the Charly Insider that I'm replacing but this one is even lighter by 35 grams! Be careful with the color - they only had white in my particular size. Here's the link: http://www.ukairsports.com/product/lazer_xstream_helmet

Good luck!

I have a couple helmets, but for warm days when I don't need a face shield I use a BMX type helmet from 661.
These can be bought for less that $100, are relatively light, strong, Certificates: CPSC, CE and have good ventilation. Advise taking the visor off.

We use Kali Shiva 2s, they work great! Will probably add a face shield soon.

After much search for an open face helmet I recent purchased Geo Explorer Pure helmet. I was quite impressed with price, padding & overall quality. For the time being I will also keep my trusty Charly Insider helmet.

Just added my face shield to my helmet per Remmoore's recommendations. It's a Kali Shiva 2 with a Bilt explorer face shield.
