Campers,

Tonight the Earth will pass through the remains of the Swift-Tuttle comet, causing the annual meteor shower called the Perseids. It should be one of the best this year, and maybe the best. The shooting stars will seem to come from the constellation Perseus, near the constellation Andromeda. From sunset to midnight, we only see meteors that catch up to Earth from behind. The real show starts after midnight, and the Moon sets about then (for the USA), so you should see more shooting stars after that. These late-nighters are the meteors that Earth runs into head-on, as it travels around the Sun.

This night is expected to be one of the best displays in about ten years, with maybe 150~200 shooting stars per hour, after midnight. The darker your viewing point is, the more shooting stars you will see. If you can see all the stars of the Little Dipper, then you have a great (clear and dark) place to watch the show.
