Challenge #1:

1978 Grouse Mountain Invitational Competitors
- later a well known Aerobatics Competition.
Read Magazine articles and more at: http://www.westcoastsoaringclub.com/for ... php?t=8232

A fun challenge for Forum old timers:
- Put names to all the faces. And... Where are they now?
- Can anyone name the pilots pictured who are still flying in the competition circuit today?

Post #2 will be all the mug shots, with place name identifiers.
Post your list of names cross referenced with each Identifier Code.

Wants to sell it and build #3 in his architectural series…

One name per reply = NOT ALLOWED. Give it your best shot, or leave it to others less senile to fill in the blank!

My problem is that I know all these folks as white haired 65 year olds… Baffled by teenaged pictures of them…

The alignment works best in Google Chrome. Just increase or reduce font till it all fits.
Its cockeyed in Firefox for sure… Best I could do.

Was our Hair really that BAAAD? Were we really that stupid in front of the Camera? Its a wonder any of us got married…

Don't know John, and my entry was just a guess anyway, so probably they're right. Are others posting their answers somewhere else?

it is funny the only one i recognized was Larry Tudor, because i flew with him when he was the same age as the pic. then leaving the sport and coming back i met several of the pilots in the pic but would never recognize them by the pic.

that was fun, great thread

That's a great who's-who, but a little sobering when you think how many of them aren't with us any more. Some happy (and often hilarious) memories, too!

Chris Bulger
Bob England (who was the funniest Brit ever)
Willi Muller
d--- Cassetta (who was the funniest attorney every)

I didn't known Chris, but the others were great folks and good friends. Like Jean-Michel said at d---'s memorial celebration, "Why is it never the assholes?"

On the flip side, there are a lot of those names that make me laugh out loud at some of the s--t we got away with back then!

Here are a couple of guesses:

3Row19 - Bryan Allen?
3Row24 - Teri Hughes (pretty sure about this one)

I flew at Grouse in 1981 like Tom, but landed safely about 10 feet outside the official field in the second round, which knocked me out of the meet. As I was watching the landings, Stewart Midwinter came across the soccer field at probably 30 mph on his Comet and ran into the chain link fence. I was on the other side of the fence and saw the fence stretch out about 4 feet, with his face assuming a waffle pattern through the chain link. The fence then threw Stewart and the bent parts of his glider back into the field. He went on to finish in the top ten.

It was a really fun meet to fly in, with great Canadian beer. However the field could be pretty darn hard to land in with our Comets and similar gliders. I can only imagine the crashes from trying to land topless gliders there.

Jeff Scott...who succumb to cancer in the late 80's I think.

In round 6.., Jeff and I flew against each other. Jeff was a top comp pilot at the time, flying the new Comet. I was flying a Harrier. This is the classic "knife to a gun fight" scenario. There was enough lift that it was a pylon race, with points awarded to first finisher around each pylon and points for the longer duration flight. In this meet, you could actually get a high score, even if you lost your round by not being far behind.

Well, after beating be around every pylon, Jeff proceeded to max out the airtime segment too, while was in the LZ seeing my score and standing drop by the minute.

After flying for an hour, Jeff came out over the LZ high and proceeded to give us all a display of his aerobatic skills..... not. He stopped is first loop upside down, and fell onto his wing. The Comet held together and we watched as Jeff floated down inverted, laying on his sail, presumably trying to crash in the designated soccer-field LZ. At around 800' if was evident he was not going to make it in, and he tossed his laundry, landing in the surrounding residential area.

His score was zero'd for landing out, and I ended up with a perfect 1000 points for the round.

Only Jeff's pride was injured.
