This technique was something I learned from flying sailplanes, by the all-knowing soaing expert Dale Masters:

Lift increasing: fly straight

Lift constant: turn 90 degrees

Lift decreasing: turn 180 degrees

This gives the simplest, yet most thorough method for mapping a thermal and staying in it. Of course, modify how aggressive you are with these three depending on conditions.

Hope you find this useful!
