This technique was something I learned from flying sailplanes, by the all-knowing soaing expert Dale Masters:
Lift increasing: fly straight
Lift constant: turn 90 degrees
Lift decreasing: turn 180 degrees
This gives the simplest, yet most thorough method for mapping a thermal and staying in it. Of course, modify how aggressive you are with these three depending on conditions.
