2 weeks ago I decided I would attempt to build a new platform for in flight video recording. The goal was to give non-flyers a real feeling of what it looks like flying from the pilots perspective, well sorta. I wanted to capture a lot of motion in the shots, so flying low on a ridge would be optimal, and the beautiful california coastline was only minutes away. Smooth air was also necessary when testing new setups like this. The last thing you want to do is whack your brand new $450 digital camera into the ground  Or have it fly off because the boom you built was too weak.

The video is available in the upper right hand corner of the home page, called "Cruising Torrey Pines". Or just click here: http://www.hanggliding.org/videos/cruisingtorrey.wmv

I spent half a day at home depot digging up materials I could slap together for this recording platform. I ended up using some aluminum tubing and host clamps to create a boom that shoots out the nose of my glider, and then bends down and points back at me.

I used my small, lightweight digital camera to shoot the video. Much smaller than a camcorder, and capable of shooting 45 minutes of full motion video.

The video was created from my very first test flight. As you can see, the boom was a little flimsy, due to the fact that I couldnt find a long enough piece of aluminum to form a strong triangle. This prevented me from doing any real fast ridge racing or aerobatics :( I was worried it would fall apart. I had a safety line attached, just in case. But I was surprised at how well the shots turned out anyway. Take a look, enjoy, and give me some feedback.

I'm of the mind that likes to look forward, not backward! I would preferr the other cam direction, but other than that it is a good production.

of course, i'm

Rubbish! :mosh: :punch:
That is a great, great vid. Excellent view of Torrey. Well worth the Image
Proof our webmaster finds time to get in the air. Great to see!

Plus I love the old technology that (albeit 32 bit restart) keeps the vid floating above whatever screen you happen to want to move to..

(To restart FireFox in 64 Bit on a Mac, quit FireFox, then right click the Firefox icon in Applications to "Get Info" and ensure 32 Bit Mode is not checked.)
